In short: Remote lock lets a rental platform restrict a device over the air when a contract is breached. It is the enforcement mechanism behind "supervision lock" — but it should be used in a graduated way, with rent collection mode as the softer first step for higher recovery rates.
Remote lock sends a restriction command from your MDM server to a rented device through the official push channel. The device then restricts itself — for example, limiting use or showing a payment reminder. The key point: it runs on Apple/Android official channels, so it is reliable and auditable.
| Stage | Action | Intensity |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 days overdue | Automated reminders + location checks | Gentle |
| 4–7 days overdue | Rent collection mode (partial restrictions + payment prompt) | Escalated |
| 7+ days, unresponsive | Full remote lock + location tracking | Strong |
| Confirmed unrecoverable | Data wipe + asset write-off | Close-out |
Locking a device outright can anger the customer and kill the recovery path. Rent collection mode — restricting some functions while keeping the payment channel open — applies pressure while leaving a way to pay, which typically produces higher recovery rates.
Remote lock must be backed by contract authorization, used only for the stated risk-control purpose, and logged for audit. It should never be used to access personal data.
