In short: Phone installment means the customer gets the device before fully paying for it. MDM gives the provider a way to protect the unpaid asset — with remote lock, location tracking and rent collection mode — so an overdue device can still be recovered.
In "use now, pay later", the provider carries the credit risk and the asset risk. If a customer stops paying and disappears, the device — still partly the provider's asset — can be resold. Without device control, that loss is permanent.
Instead of locking the device outright, rent collection mode restricts some functions while keeping the payment channel open. This keeps the customer able to pay — which recovers more money than a hard lock — while still applying pressure.
Installment MDM must be disclosed in the contract, used only for asset protection, and never to access personal data. Done right, it protects both the provider and the paying customer.
