Lost Mode vs Supervision Lock: What's the Difference

Published 2026-08-18 · LuckyMDM Blog

In short: Lost Mode is an Apple feature for temporarily locking a lost or stolen device. Supervision lock is an organization-level control that manages a device for its whole rental or ownership lifecycle. Rental businesses need supervision — Lost Mode alone is not risk control.

What is Lost Mode?

Lost Mode locks a device, displays a message, and can track its location. It is designed for a user who has lost a personal device and wants to protect it until recovery.

What is Supervision Lock?

Supervision lock means a device is enrolled in an organization's MDM and can be restricted remotely through official channels. It is a persistent, organization-controlled state — not a one-time event.

Which One Does Rental Need?

Phone rental needs supervision lock. Lost Mode cannot enforce a rental contract or protect a fleet of rented devices. Supervision gives the platform ongoing, auditable control from enrollment to return.
