In short: Apple supervision is a special management state for iOS and iPadOS devices, unlocked through Apple Business Manager (ABM) and Automated Device Enrollment (ADE). It gives rental businesses control that normal MDM cannot — including remote lock, device restrictions and activation lock management — through Apple's official framework.
Supervision is a device state in which the device is owned and managed by an organization rather than an individual. A supervised device can receive management commands that an unsupervised device cannot, such as remote lock and certain restrictions. For phone rental, supervision is what makes "supervision lock" a real, enforceable control.
The workflow has three steps:
Supervision is what separates a real, compliance-safe rental control from a third-party "lock" that relies on jailbreaks or hacks. Because it runs on Apple's official framework, it keeps working across iOS updates and provides a clean, auditable control path.
| Type | Purpose | Controlled by |
|---|---|---|
| Supervision lock | Business device control for rental risk | Your MDM server (organization) |
| Activation lock | Anti-theft protection tied to an Apple ID | Apple ID / Apple servers |
In rental, the recommended setup is organization-linked activation lock plus supervision — so control does not depend on the customer's Apple ID.
Supervision lock is only appropriate with customer consent and contract authorization. It should never be used to access personal data — only to protect the device asset.
